Alienware M16 R2 Review with Detailed Specifications

Alienware M16 R2 Design:

The design of the Alienware M16 R2 is more compact and has undergone significant changes from previous models.

The iconic circular LED strip and rounded cooling vent at the back are gone, which might disappoint some fans. However, this change aims to improve the user experience. Despite losing some aesthetics from the back view, the laptop is now sleeker and lighter, weighing just 2.61 kg. It still maintains a unique style with thick aluminum surfaces, illuminated logos, and an embossed number 16 for easy recognition.

Alienware M16 R2 Design

When you open the laptop, you’ll notice stylish details like the mouse area with quality lines and a honeycomb-shaped cooling vent. The glowing alien head logos, LED touchpad border, and illuminated keyboard keys add elegance and personality. The LED lights on the Alienware are bright, giving the laptop a touch of sophistication. Overall, the design is simple yet full of character, making the laptop stand out.

Alienware M16 R2 Display:

The screen is big, at 16 inches, and it’s the 2560 x 1600 resolution, 240 HZ IPS display. It looks good and moves smoothly, but it’s only 300 nits bright. While some people might be fine with that, other brands offer brighter screens, like 500 nits, or different types like OLED or mini LED. It’s strange why they went with only a 300 nit panel when there are better options out there. Even the XPS range has a bright OLED panel.

Alienware M16 R2 Ports:

On the left side, we have an Ethernet port and a headset jack. On the right, there are two USB ports and a Micro SD card slot. At the back, there’s the power jack, an HDMI 2.1 port, a USB-C port, and a Thunderbolt port, which now supports power delivery.

Overall, the ports are a good mix, but it’s odd that the Ethernet port is on the side. Also, it’s questionable why they opted for a Micro SD card slot instead of a full-size one on a 16-inch laptop.

Alienware M16 R2 Keyboard:

Opening the M16 R2 feels good with a sturdy hinge that keeps the display steady. The keyboard has RGB lighting that you can customize. We only get the option for each key to have its own color, but other places might have a different setup. Just be careful when you’re setting it up. There’s no mechanical keyboard option available, but the default keyboard is still really good.

Alienware M16 R2 Trackpad:

The laptop has one of the best keyboards on the market, but unfortunately, the trackpad isn’t as impressive. It’s made of plastic and doesn’t feel very premium, even though it works well and responds accurately to gestures.

Above the keyboard, there’s an iconic alien head power button that lights up blue when plugged in and yellow when on battery. You can customize the colors of this button using the Alienware Command Center. Speaking of RGB lighting, there’s also a backlit alien head logo and a light strip around the trackpad.

Alienware M16 R2 Webcam and Windows Hello:

The Alienware M16 R2 has a 1080p webcam and microphone. There’s a new automatic framing feature that works with Windows. It’s a bit slow but works well. It includes standard blur and portrait blur background effects.

Plus, it has Windows Hello facial recognition, which is my favorite way to log into Windows.

Inside the Alienware M16 R2:

Inside, there’s a big 90Wh battery and two downward-firing speakers. There are also two slots for adding extra storage, but Dell only provides a heat sink for one of them, so you’ll need to find another for the second drive.

The RAM slots are accessible under the Mylar sheets, so you can upgrade them. The Wi-Fi 7 card is also upgradable, but it’s already the latest, so you won’t need to change it soon. The cooling system is standard and it comes with a heat sink and two fans.

But the good news is, the heat sink is easy to access, facing the user, which makes future maintenance easier than Alienware’s usual setup.

Alienware M16 R2 Performance & Gaming:

let’s dive into how this laptop performs. Starting with the CPU, it’s in line with similar models but doesn’t quite match up to some other CPUs out there. However, considering it’s aimed at a more casual market, the performance is still good. The laptop is efficient and comes with different performance profiles in the Alienware Command Center, which can make a noticeable difference in how it runs.

Now, onto graphics performance. The M16 R2 has Advanced Optimus and a G-Sync+ capable panel, making it easy to switch to the dedicated GPU when gaming. The RTX 4070 performs well, especially with the right settings, delivering solid gaming performance at its native 1600p resolution. You can also boost performance further with features like DLSS or frame generation.

The laptop’s behavior depends a lot on the performance profile you choose. The Command Center usually sets it to Performance mode when you’re gaming, but you can customize profiles for different games. Fan noise varies from quiet to very loud, depending on the profile.

It also has some handy shortcuts, like the F1 key for maximum performance and fan noise, and the F2 key for a quieter mode with white lighting. The Command Center, while not perfect, has improved over time, allowing you to control graphics settings, adjust lighting, and integrate other Alienware peripherals.

Overall, the M16 R2 offers solid performance and gaming capabilities, especially for casual gamers, with room for customization through the Alienware Command Center.

Alienware M16 R2 Speakers:

Alongside the keyboard, there are air intakes, but there aren’t speakers there. The speakers are placed facing downward, and they don’t sound great. They’re not very loud and quite small, so they’re just okay.

Alienware M16 R2 Battery Life:

In my experience, it was surprisingly good for a gaming laptop. During our usual battery test of streaming YouTube over Wi-Fi at 200 nits brightness, the laptop lasted for 7 hours and 25 minutes, even while running at 240 Hz with the backlighting on. You could easily get over 8 hours of use out of it. Performance on battery was only slightly lower than when plugged in.

The laptop comes with a compact 240W GaN charger, and Dell finally enabled power delivery from the Thunderbolt port. This means you can use a 100W USB-C charger or a PD monitor for light use if you don’t have your power adapter with you.

Alienware M16 R2 Pros & Cons:

Pros: This laptop feels more portable and compact, making it easier to take with me on the go. It’s great for both work and play, especially with the new stealth mode, good battery life, and excellent performance. Having many ports is also helpful.

Cons: The main problem is still the 300 nit display. It is also missing features like an OLED or brighter display.
